MCP and REST answer different integration questions. REST commonly exposes application resources and operations to software clients. MCP gives an AI host a structured way to discover and invoke tools and access context. A product can use both: an MCP adapter can call the same application services as the existing REST API.

The contract to define first

Keep domain rules beneath both interfaces. Authorization, validation and duplicate-action handling should not depend on which client initiated the request. Compare discovery needs, supported hosts, transport behavior and operational ownership before adding another public interface. An adapter is useful when it adds a genuine agent workflow; wrapping every endpoint creates a larger surface without automatically improving the user experience.

A worked scenario

Consider a coach program service with established read and update operations. A REST client knows the API contract in advance. An agent-facing tool might expose a smaller task such as previewing a program change, with explicit constraints. Both paths should reach the same ownership check and version validation.

An implementation and review sequence

  1. List which clients need discovery versus a fixed contract
  2. Reuse the existing domain service and permission checks
  3. Test equivalent operations through both interfaces

Failure cases worth testing

Choose the interface using a task and permissions matrix. Use this matrix as a starting fixture and adapt the expected behavior to the documented product contract.

Tradeoffs and limits

Direct REST is often sufficient for a tightly controlled single integration. MCP becomes more useful when supported AI hosts need tool discovery and a consistent invocation surface.

Use the result to make a decision

The practical output is straightforward: choose the interface using a task and permissions matrix. Keep the assumptions with the artifact so a product owner, implementer or prospective partner can review the same decision. A useful handoff states the supported scope, the evidence collected and the remaining dependency instead of treating a successful demonstration as proof of every operating condition.

When does MCP add value over a direct REST integration?

MCP and REST answer different integration questions. Direct REST is often sufficient for a tightly controlled single integration.

Which failure cases should be included in the review?

Include these explicit cases: Two clients request the same unauthorized record: both are denied by the domain boundary; A tool exposes fewer fields than REST: document the intentional narrower contract; One interface changes version: run compatibility fixtures for the other.
