Health Connect gives Android product teams a common interface for health and fitness records. That simplifies part of the integration, but the product still owns important decisions: what it needs to read, how to explain access, which source to trust and what to do when information is absent. Treat those questions as the feature specification.
Why revisit the integration now?
Google’s current Health Connect documentation covers both fitness data and a medical-records feature based on FHIR. These are different product responsibilities. A workout app should not request broader access simply because another data category exists. Check device support, the specific API’s availability and the permissions appropriate to the feature before promising it to customers.
Define the user-visible outcome first
“Connect your health data” is too vague to guide implementation. A clearer outcome is “show the workouts the user chooses to share in their weekly activity view.” Name the required record types, refresh behaviour and places the imported data will appear. A coach dashboard creates another access boundary: permission to read a record into an app does not by itself decide which other people should see it.
Keep source information with the record
A phone, watch and another fitness app can describe overlapping activity. Store enough provenance to trace an imported value: its source, observation interval, unit and import time. Define a stable import identity where the API permits it, so retrying a read does not create duplicate activity. Decide which records can be reconciled automatically and where the user needs a visible explanation.
Represent missing readings honestly
No reading can mean no permission, no device use, delayed synchronisation or an unsupported signal. It should not automatically become a zero. Keep connection state separate from the health value, and show a useful recovery action. The same distinction matters when an AI feature consumes the data: uncertainty in the input should remain visible in the resulting explanation.
Test consent as a lifecycle
- A user connects only some record types.
- Permission is revoked after records have been imported.
- Two sources report overlapping activity.
- A repeated import runs after a timeout.
- The user disconnects a device or requests deletion.
For a new healthtech product, the reusable lesson is the boundary design. UltraFit360’s documented client/API separation provides useful architecture context; this article does not claim that every Health Connect capability is deployed in UltraFit360. Confirm the actual supported features independently.

What should a fitness app team plan before integrating Health Connect?
Plan permissions, provenance, duplicate records and missing readings before connecting wearable data to a fitness app or coaching dashboard.
